Losing weight is probably one of the biggest health concerns, and knowing your body, as well as the good slimming practices,is essential in successfully improving your body shape. However, in some situations, you may think that you do everything – eat healthy, exercise and have a good motivation – however the scale refuses to budge. Obviously, something sabotages your slimming attempts, but… what is it?
There are a few bad habits that you may not be aware of, which have repercussions on your attempts to be slimmer. Change them and you will eventually start to lose that weight.
- Eating all the time
There are many theories about how often we should eat during the day, but our bodies are different and react differently, so we should make an eating strategy according to our personal needs. Typically, you should eat more in the morning and avoid any food after 6, in the evening.
Control your appetite and do not eat when you crave for something; eat when you are hungry and choose healthy food that will keep you satisfied for a few hours. Do not skip meals, but mix up diet in order to avoid eating the same food again and again. If you are not sure about what food and what amount is healthy, you can consult a nutritionist. He/ she will be able to give you professional advice about your eating habits and help you change them.
- Not getting enough sleep
Not getting enough quality sleep at night is listed as the first `enemy` for those who try losing weight. The lack of proper sleeping affects the way your body processes and metabolizes carbohydrates, which will raise the insulin level. Consequently, the body will store more fat, especially in the problematic areas (abdomen, hips…). Being tired also has negative consequences on the stress levels. Your body will release cortisol in excess in order to boost your energy, which will generate excessive glucose production and glucose will be converted into fat.
So make sure that you go to bed early; sleep time recommendations for adults 20+ are 7-8 hours per night. In order to improve your sleep, you must actually make sleep a priority. You can make a sleep schedule and stick to it even on weekends, you can also try yoga or other relaxing rituals before going to bed, you must have a comfortable bed and temperature in the room, and you must avoid caffeine and alcohol.
- Eating too much processed dairy and grains
We have been taught that dairy products are rich in calcium, which is true; however, some processed dairy products also have downsides that you should know about. Low-fat products may be tempting if you are trying to lose weight, but they are actually not recommended at all, as they increase the level of insulin and consequently your body will stop burning the fat. You should choose yogurt or fermented dairy products instead.
As for grains, they can be consumed in reasonable amounts, but consider that they contain gluten and other substances that create favorable conditions for obesity, making minerals unavailable to your body.
